After an extensive search, Cardinal Hayes High School has appointed Bronx native Steven Iuso as its next principal.

“Mr. Iuso is uniquely qualified to be the next academic leader of Cardinal Hayes,” said Dr. Michael Carey, president of Cardinal Hayes.

Iuso will succeed William Lessa, a revered figure in New York Catholic education who is stepping down from his role.

“Mr. Lessa is a true legend in New York Catholic education. He is the heart and soul of Cardinal Hayes High School and has dedicated his life to the service of the students, and families of the school. This transition is bittersweet, but I am very excited for this next chapter in the illustrious history of Cardinal Hayes High School,” Dr. Carey said.

Iuso joins Cardinal Hayes from Christ the King School in the Bronx, where he has served as principal since 2016. During his tenure, he led the school through the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, oversaw significant renovations, and helped increase enrollment and improve test scores across grades K-8.

“I am honored and privileged to be the next principal of Cardinal Hayes High School,” Iuso said.

Before becoming an administrator, Iuso taught English language arts, social studies, and religion for seven years in the Archdiocese of New York and the Diocese of Brooklyn.

A lifelong Bronx resident, Iuso is an alumnus of Saint Benedict School and Cardinal Spellman High School. He earned a bachelor’s degree in history from Queens College and holds two master’s degrees — one in education from Mercy College and another in school building leadership from Fordham University, where he graduated with honors. He began his career in education in 2008.

Beyond the classroom, Iuso played a key role in revitalizing his community. In 2002, he led the renovation of the Saint Benedict’s Church rectory garden on Bruckner Boulevard, a project completed under Bishop Edmund Whalen’s leadership. More than two decades later, the garden remains a thriving landmark.

Iuso will officially assume his role as principal of Cardinal Hayes High School on July 1, 2025.

Cardinal Hayes High School is an all-boys Roman Catholic high school located on the Grand Concourse in the South Bronx. Founded in 1941, the school serves a diverse student body from the New York City metropolitan area, inspiring young men to become lifelong learners and responsible citizens.
