Cardinal Dolan Performs the Solemn Liturgy of The Lord’s Passion and Death at St. Patrick's Cathedral

In one of the most dramatic gestures of the liturgical calendar, Cardinal Timothy Dolan began the Solemn Liturgy of the Lord’s Passion and Death by prostrating himself before the unadorned altar of a packed St. Patrick’s Cathedral.
That action represents humility and reverence for the sacrifice of Christ.
The Solemn Liturgy begins with the celebrant and concelebrants entering without music, followed by the prostration.
“Remember your mercies oh Lord, and with your eternal protection sanctify your servants for whom Christ your son, by the shedding of His blood established the Paschal mystery, who lives and reigns forever and ever,” Cardinal Dolan prayed to begin the liturgy.
In his homily, Cardinal Dolan referred to “this day of unparalleled evil that we weirdly call ‘good.'”
On what he called “a day of contrasts,” Cardinal Dolan said “Jesus accepted all the bad, so we could call this Friday ‘good.'”
The Solemn Liturgy also features the Adoration of the Cross, in which the faithful kiss or otherwise make contact with a large crucifix in order to Christ’s sacrifice.
“Almighty ever-living God, you have restored us to life by the blessed death and resurrection of your Christ, preserve within us the work of your mercy, that by partaking of this mystery, we may have a life unceasingly devoted to you, through Christ our Lord,” Cardinal Dolan prayed, bringing the liturgy to a close, without procession music or other fanfare.
The crucifix was then brought forward and placed at the foot of the altar to allow for the Adoration of the Cross by the many faithful who attended the Mass.
