Archbishop Hicks Looks Back at His ‘Extraordinary’ First Alfred E. Smith Memorial Foundation Dinner
By: Archbishop Ronald Hicks
On the Oct. 20 episode of “All Good Things with Archbishop Hicks,” Archbishop Ronald Hicks and Monsignor James Vlaun look back at Cardinal Timothy Dolan’s keynote speech at the 81st Alfred E. Smith Memorial Foundation Dinner.
Just one day after his father, Ronald J. Hicks, entered eternal life, Archbishop Ronald A. Hicks attended the 81st Alfred E. Smith Memorial Foundation Dinner at the Waldorf Astoria.
It marked the first time hosting the dinner, which benefits women and children in need in New York City, since becoming the Archbishop of New York.
“I didn’t know what to expect, frankly,” he told Monsignor James Vlaun during the Oct. 20 episode of “All Good Things with Archbishop Hicks.” “I had watched it on television before, but until you see it actually happen, it’s an event unlike any other. I just loved the fact that it could bring people together for such a good thing.”
Msgr. Vlaun, who also attended, noted that there was often a line of about a dozen or so people during the event who wanted to greet Archbishop Hicks. Many welcomed him to New York and shared their gratitude for his ministry, while others were there to offer condolences.
“I’ve picked up on that from everyone who was there. ‘We’re happy that you’re here, good luck. We’re behind you, whatever you need, here we are’…” the archbishop said. “My father had just passed away hours beforehand. People who were there knew about it, and they were right there to say, ‘We’re with you, we’re praying for you, we’re sorry for your loss. Know that you matter.’”
