Cardinal Timothy Michael Dolan has been named to The Algemeiner‘s annual “J100” list, recognizing 100 individuals who have positively influenced Jewish life over the past year.

The Algemeiner, founded in 1972, is one of the most widely read English-language Jewish newspapers in the world, covering news, culture, and current events with a particular focus on antisemitism and support for Israel. The publication’s 12th annual gala, at which the honorees were celebrated, took place on March 9 in Manhattan.

A voice of clarity

The J100 list recognized Cardinal Dolan for speaking “early and plainly” after the Hamas attacks of October 7, 2023, calling Hamas’s violence what it was and refusing to soften the reality of Jewish suffering. The publication noted that in 2025, he made that commitment unmistakable, writing an essay for The Free Press titled “The Evils of Antisemitism,” declaring that “Jew-hatred and Christianity are incompatible.” In September, he organized “Stand Up Sunday” at St. Patrick’s Cathedral, a Mass uniting Catholic and Jewish leaders to denounce antisemitism. Rabbi Joseph Potasnik called him “a great friend” and “an honorary Jew.”

Pope Leo XIV accepted Cardinal Dolan’s retirement in December, after the cardinal turned 75 earlier in the year. The American Jewish Committee marked the occasion with a tribute recognizing his decades of interfaith advocacy.

The J100 is not a ranking. Instead, it highlights 100 individuals, Jewish and non-Jewish, whose actions over the past year had a demonstrably positive impact on Jewish life and Israel, noting that without their leadership, advocacy, acumen, creativity, or courage, Jewish life today would be diminished.

This year’s list was assembled against a backdrop of ongoing conflict in the Middle East and a historic surge in antisemitism worldwide following the October 7 attacks. Honorees span government, business, academia, media, religion, and sports, and include figures such as U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Daily Wire co-founder Ben Shapiro, NHL star Zach Hyman, and Princeton professor Robert P. George. The list also includes non-Jewish figures recognized for their solidarity with the Jewish community and the State of Israel, among them Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama and Madrid regional president Isabel Díaz Ayuso.
