The St. Nicholas Project’s annual St. Nicholas Shopping Day was held on Saturday, December 3, at the Church of Our Savior on Park Ave.
Cardinal Timothy Dolan led volunteers from Catholic Charities New York, the event’s organizer, in selecting items of warm clothing and other necessities for about 125 families in need.
“This is the Christmas spirit. Christmas spirit isn’t buying, Christmas spirit is giving,” Cardinal Timothy Dolan said in a television interview with CBS New York.
“Because of inflation, their dollars are not able to buy even the basic necessities of a warm coat, they’re not able to buy a sweater, they’re not able to buy pajamas. So this year, it’s even more important that this happens,” Msgr. Kevin Sullivan, executive director of Catholic Charities, told CBS New York.
“Because of your help and generosity, we provided warm winter clothing to over 5,000 people, from New York City to the Hudson Valley,” Catholic Charities New York posted on its website following the event.
“The St. Nicholas Project is a year-round initiative to help the most vulnerable in New York City and neighboring communities by providing support to individuals and families through donations of essential items and connecting them to much-needed services,” Catholic Charities New York said on its website. “In addition to providing food, emergency cash assistance, and case management support throughout the year, we distribute winter coats, hats, gloves, scarves, sweaters, blankets, and more to those who otherwise would go without during the cold winter months.”
