WASHINGTON – Catholic schools are an education model rooted in the recognition of the inherent dignity of every person, said Bishop David M. O’Connell, C.M., chairman of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Committee on Catholic Education. He expressed gratitude to Senator Eric Schmitt of Missouri and Congressman Darin LaHood of Illinois for introducing bipartisan resolutions celebrating National Catholic Schools Week; read the resolution here.

“I wish to express my heartfelt appreciation to Catholic educators for their steadfast dedication to forming students in the Catholic faith. It is through their dedicated service to the educational ministry of the Church that Catholic schools continue to provide the nation with an education model rooted in the recognition of the inherent dignity of every person. Our schools focus not only on academic excellence but also on the spiritual, moral, and intellectual growth of students, with the goal of not only the flourishing of each individual, but also their ultimate salvation,” Bishop O’Connell stated. “Catholic schools nurture humility, wisdom, and virtue, guiding students to recognize and embrace what is true, good, and beautiful. This education empowers them to live lives of service to God and others, offering a freedom that only Christ can provide.”

Bishop O’Connell also emphasized the critical role of families in Catholic education. “Our Church recognizes the primacy of parents as the first educators of their children, and Catholic schools are committed to working alongside them, deeply incorporating families into both the life of the school and the Church.”

Catholic Schools Week is observed during the last week of January each year where parish and school communities celebrate the history and contributions of Catholic education in the United States in their local communities. Many schools host open houses, celebrate special Masses, and school events meant to showcase the community’s spirit and enthusiasm for Catholic education. The theme for National Catholic Schools Week 2025 is “United in Faith and Community,” which reflects how Catholic schools unite students, families and educators in the Gospel message of Jesus Christ, fostering communities rooted in faith love and service.

The Religion Bee is a great opportunity for the students to show off their knowledge in front of the whole school.
