Big Deal supermarket owner Miguel Garcia announced that the Church of St. Clare of Assisi-St. Francis Xavier Parish Holy Name Societies and Big Deal Supermarket will once again sponsor their annual Lenten Fundraiser which raises critical funds for these two Morris Park Bronx parishes.

Beginning on Friday, February 17 and continuing through Easter Sunday, April 9, parishioners shopping at Big Deal Supermarket, located at 1018 Morris Park Avenue, can contribute to the fundraiser by dropping their sales receipts into the big wooden box located in the front of the store, after they have checked out.

A percentage of all sales during this period will be donated to the church.

Rev. Salvatore DeStefano, Pastor of the Church of St. Clare of Assisi-St. Francis Xavier Parish and Holy Name Society Spiritual Director, noted that the Lenten Fundraiser is an annual tradition that not only raises funds for needed church repairs, church programs, and other projects without having to ask parishioners for monetary donations but serves to unite the community during Lent. Shoppers gladly contribute to the fundraiser as they fill their shopping carts at Big Deal with delicious and nutritious foods, desserts, and fresh fruits from the supermarket’s gourmet produce department.

In 2022, $6,803 was raised. $82,692 has been raised since the fundraiser’s inception in 2010. SFX HNS Vice President Martin Dolgow and HNS Secretary Peter Ulrich will be coordinating the event for the Holy Name Society. Tom Tronconi serves as SFX HNS President and James J. Curran III as President of St. Clare of Assisi’s HNS.

This year’s Lenten Fundraiser will be dedicated to the late Anthony J. Merolla, a parishioner at St. Clare’s Church, who served as executive secretary of the Archdiocesan Union of the Holy Name Society and participated in publicizing the Lenten Fundraisers yearly since 2010.

Delivery service is available, inquire when ordering.
In his homily, Fr. John Anthony Boughton, CFR, told the four men they were not graduating, but matriculating, into a life of joyful sacrifice.
