NEWBURGH — Mount Saint Mary College Magazine recently earned two St. Juan Diego Collegiate Awards from the Catholic Media Association, in recognition of journalistic excellence.

The winners were selected from 100 entries in various categories, including design, writing, photography, broadcast, and digital media. The entries were judged by professional journalists and communicators from CMA’s membership.

A story in the Winter 2022 issue of Mount Magazine, “On the Road Again,” earned first place in the Alumni Magazine Division for “Best Story and Photo Package by Two Individuals or More.” The story focused on alumna Taylor Walton ’15 and her passion for photography while traveling and working remotely.

Judges referred to the story as “a timely, interesting alumna feature piece. The topic lends itself to lovely photography, which has been well achieved here. The story is interesting, and it carries along at an appropriate pace.”

In addition, another story from the Winter 2022 issue of Mount Magazine, “Our Newest Entrepreneurs,” earned second place in the Alumni Magazine Division for “Best Feature Article.” This article focused on four alumni-owned businesses, including a Catholic marketing and creative agency, a juice bar, a bookstore, and an ice cream shop.

Judges noted that “This focused, thorough story represents an admirable blend of interviewees’ quotations and author’s observations. The topic is a relevant one, likely to have generated considerable interest among the publication’s readers. The entrepreneurs’ sharing of how their college studies paved the way to their business lives is a unifying and worthwhile feature.”
