Ordained in 1985, Father Thi spent his entire priesthood at the Basilica ministering to the Chinese community
Reverend Father Andrew Thi, the retired parochial vicar of Old St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Manhattan, entered eternal life on December 20, 2024.
Born on August 15, 1938, Father Thi was ordained on June 29, 1985. He celebrated his silver jubilee in 2010.
Old St. Patrick’s Cathedral remembered their retired parochial vicar.
“We remember and give thanks for the life of our former parochial vicar, Father Andrew Thi, who passed away [on December 20]. Father Thi was born in Guangzhou, China, and was doing pastoral work in Vietnam when he fled that country in 1975 on a small boat with 50 other Chinese Catholics. He learned English at the Maryknoll Seminary in Ossining and worked as a sacristan at the Church of the Transfiguration in Manhattan before entering St. Joseph’s Seminary in 1980.
“Ordained in 1985, Father Thi spent his entire priesthood at the Basilica ministering to the Chinese community. Although he officially retired in 2008, he remained in residence here until only two years ago, continuing to devote himself to the care of the Chinese faithful.
“In the Basilica stands a statue of Our Lady of China, a testament to the strength and devotion of the faith community to which he ministered. In your charity, please pray for the repose of his soul. Requiescat in pace.”
