Sister Jeanne Delaney, Sister Maureen James, was born March 26, 1933, in the Bronx, one of three children, two daughters and one son, of James and Catherine Coyle Delaney. Jeanne attended Ursuline Academy in the Bronx for elementary school and Cathedral High School in Manhattan. After graduation, she entered the Sisters of Charity of New York on September 8, 1950. Sister James received a B.A. in history from the College (University) of Mount Saint Vincent and an M.A. in administration from Boston College. New York State awarded her permanent certification in administration.

Sister Jeanne devoted her 60 years of active ministry to education as a classroom teacher in elementary grades and as administrator. Her first mission service, at Saint Peter in Yonkers as a second-grade teacher, was followed by an assignment to Sacred Heart in Staten Island. She returned to Saint Peter as principal for 15 years. In 1982, Sister Jeanne began her ministry of 31 years in Briarcliff Manor, New York, teaching at Saint Theresa School and, later, the Todd School. In 2013, she retired from full-time active ministry and, in 2019, joined the retirement community at Mount Saint Vincent Convent.

Sister Jeanne entered eternal life on May 20, 2026, at St. Joseph’s Medical Center in the 75th year of commitment as a Sister of Charity of New York.

Known as a gentle, caring person, Sister Jeanne always saw the positive in others and in situations. She maintained an upbeat outlook on life, which made her easy to approach in time of need and a happy companion for any adventure. A ready smile always invited a conversation and a sharing on simple everyday events. Sister Jeanne was a faithful, devoted presence to her brother, Father William Delaney, especially during his final illness, and she remained close with extended family.

Sister Jeanne, you have received the call to the enjoyment of eternal life with our gracious and merciful God. Your YES to this final summons concludes a life of fidelity to other calls to know your God more intimately. Welcome to the fullness of God’s abundant love.
