Sr. Rose Vermette, a devoted member of the Sisters of Our Lady of Christian Doctrine for 75 years, passed away peacefully in Siena Hall, Dominican Convent, Sparkill, on Monday, May 4, 2026. She was born on July 25, 1935, to Wilfred and Helen Vermette in New York City. She entered the Sisters of Our Lady of Christian Doctrine on October 15, 1951, and received the religious name Sr. Mary Teresa of the Holy Spirit. She professed first vows on May 6, 1954, and final vows on June 28, 1957. Her passing is another shimmering light among the deceased Sisters of Our Lady of Christian Doctrine.

She attended grammar school at Our Lady of the Scapular and St. Michael’s High School in Manhattan, then continued to Fordham University, earning a Bachelor of Science in Education, and to Boston College, earning a Master of Arts in Religious Education.

Her ministerial assignments included religious education and RCIA work as director of several parishes in South Carolina and Florida. She served as president of the congregation from 2010 to 2014. From 2002 to 2010, she served at Immaculate Conception Parish in Tuckahoe. From 1999 to 2001, she was director of the Marydell Faith and Life Center in Nyack. From 1992 to 1999, she served as director of the New York Archdiocesan Office of the Catechumenate.

Her community ministries included serving as spiritual director from 1986 to 2014 and formation director from 1983 to 1986. She was a certified spiritual director, a certified Contemplative Outreach workshop presenter, coordinator of Contemplative Outreach of Westchester, regional coordinator of DREs in Charleston, S.C., secretary of the Council of Women Religious in Orlando, Fla., secretary of Women Religious in South Carolina, and secretary of the Council of Women Religious in New York. She was highly regarded for her ministry as a spiritual director and for her devotion to the practice of centering prayer and Contemplative Outreach. Her life was a testament to the power of faith in action — a life of prayer and commitment that bore witness to the depth of her faith.

She was predeceased by her parents, Wilfred and Helen; her stepfather, James McMahon; her brother, Wilfred Vermette; her stepbrothers James and William McMahon; her sisters Rita Jones and Noreen Blanchard; and her niece Deborah Jones.
