Pope Leo has expressed his deep sorrow following the earthquake that struck several parts of Colombia, offering prayers “for the eternal rest of those who died” and for the swift recovery of all those affected by the tragedy.

His words came in a telegram signed by Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Holy See’s Secretary of State. They were addressed to Archbishop Francisco Javier Múnera Correa of Cartagena, president of the Colombian Bishops’ Conference.

The 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck the southwest of the country on Aug. 10, killing more than 150 people and injuring hundreds more. It also caused widespread damage, including to several churches.

In the message, Pope Leo offers his heartfelt condolences to the families who, “in this hour of profound sorrow, mourn the loss of their loved ones.”

He also expresses his gratitude to all those working “with generous dedication” in search-and-rescue operations and in providing relief and assistance to those affected, assuring them of his spiritual closeness.

In conclusion, the Pope asks the Lord, through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, to “pour out upon the beloved Colombian people the gifts of spiritual strength and Christian hope,” and imparts his heartfelt Apostolic Blessing.
