Msgr. Eduardo Chávez Sánchez, a canon at the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City, is scheduled to give a number of presentations on the history and significance of Our Lady of Guadalupe beginning on Friday, April 28 through Monday, May 1.

All presentations will be in Spanish, with no English interpretation.

Each talk will include a slideshow and a discussion session, said Juan Carlos Rodriguez, a lead event organizer. Msgr. Chávez will be introduced by the parish pastor, Fr. Jesus Ledezma. The presentation will be given Friday, April 28, at St. Anthony of Padua in the Bronx, 5 p.m; Saturday, April 29, at St. Gabriel in New Rochelle 12:30 p.m.; at the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe at St. Bernard, 328 West 14th Street, in Manhattan from 2-6 p.m.; and Monday, May 1, at St. Mary’s in Wappingers Falls, 7 p.m.    

Msgr. Chávez is also executive director of the Instituto Superior de Estudios Guadalupanos (Superior Institute on Guadalupan Studies) in Mexico City. He is a leading authority of Our Lady of Guadalupe. In May 2001, Cardinal Norberto Rivera Carrera, then-Archbishop of Mexico, appointed him postulator for the cause of Saint Juan Diego, who was canonized in July 2002.    

Born in Mexico City, Msgr. Chávez studied philosophy and theology at the Institute for Ecclesiastical Studies in Mexico’s Conciliar Seminary. He was ordained in 1981 in the Archdiocese of Mexico. He holds a diploma in philosophy from the Universidad del Valle de Atemajac in Guadalajara, and a doctorate in Church history from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome.    

Msgr. Chávez has made numerous contributions to the study of the Guadalupan apparitions witnessed by Juan Diego, addressing major academic institutions internationally, and publishing related books and articles.
