Pope Leo XIV Appoints Most Reverend Brendan Cahill as Bishop of Joliet

He is currently the chairman of the USCCB SubCommittee for the Pastoral Care of Migrants, Refugees and Travelers and the chair-elect for the USCCB Committee for Migration
WASHINGTON – Pope Leo XIV has appointed Most Reverend Brendan J. Cahill, currently Bishop of Victoria in Texas, as the Bishop of Joliet.
The appointment was publicized in Washington, D.C. on September 17, 2026, by Archbishop Gabriele Caccia, apostolic nuncio to the United States.
“The Holy Father has sent the Diocese of Joliet a wonderful gift: Bishop Brendan Cahill from the Diocese of Victoria in Texas,” said Archbishop Ronald Hicks on the appointment of Bishop Cahill. Archbishop Hicks served as Bishop of Joliet for five years until Pope Leo XIV appointed him Archbishop of New York on Dec. 18, 2025.
“Over the past eight years, I’ve had the opportunity to get to know Bishop Cahill, and I can say with confidence that he is a man of deep faith, with the heart of a pastor who walks with those on the margins, a contagious enthusiasm, and a true love for Jesus. His bilingual gifts, especially his fluency in Spanish, will serve the diocese beautifully.”
